Case Study: Stone Fireplace
Location: Bury St Edmunds
Fireplace: The Porteous in Cambrian Cream stone
Appliance: Barbas Unilux-3 52 Woodburning Cassette
Infill and Hearth: Ubatuba granite
Our clients contacted us as they were looking to update their fireplace. This consisted of an open fire set in a 'stone wall' style of fireplace, which was popular in the 1970s.
After visiting our showroom and viewing our stone fireplace designs, all of which are hand carved in our own masonry workshops, our clients settled on The Porteous, a classic fireplace design, in Cambrian Cream stone with Ubatuba granite infill and hearth.
In addition to a new fireplace surround and hearth, our clients were interested in incorporating a more efficient solid fuel appliance into their installation.
Traditional open fire grates are only around 25% efficient, so the majority of the heat is lost up the chimney. In contrast, modern cassette stoves are up to around 80% efficient, due to their glass door and advanced combustion technologies.
The Barbas Unilux-3 52 woodburning cassette stove was chosen due to its ideal proportions, excellent heat output of up to 7kW, and clean stylings thanks to its large glass panel and simple steel frame.
Our clients were thrilled with the finished result, which provided them with not only a stylish new focal point in their room, but also a modern, efficient and environmentally friendly secondary heating appliance.
