Portland Stone

Architects and designers have chosen Portland Stone for over a thousand years. It is quarried on the Isle of Portland, Dorset.

Many of the greatest buildings in London are constructed from Portland Stone.

We currently use Jordans Basebed, which has small grey shell fragments, but is almost a 'shell free' basebed, and the cleanest Portland stone ever produced.

Reference projects: St Paul's Cathedral; Buckingham Palace (eastern side); Somerset House; Bank of England; Mansion House; National Gallery; United Nations HQ (New York).

Portland stone is suitable for internal and external use.

IMPORTANT: Images are only a guide to the characteristics of the material, and may not be fully representative of the current batch of stone held in stock. Natural stones are subject to variations in veining, pattern and colour, sometimes even within the same batch.

  • Colour guide: Cream white with very tight texture
  • Origin: Dorset, England
  • Format: Dimension stone - cut to size from blocks
  • Finish: Sawn, Fine Rubbed
